CHHSA is focused on helping those in Cumberland County address challenges related to homelessness and housing insecurity by creating accommodation options and wrap-around support services. The vision of CHHSA is to ensure that everyone in Cumberland County has access to safe, affordable, and stable housing. To fulfill our vision, we will create a Community Housing Hub, a multi-purpose facility that provides supportive programming and housing solutions to people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.
We are the first permanent emergency shelter in Cumberland County, which serves three meals daily, 365 days a year. We operate supportive housing units and provide intensive case management services to our residents. We house multiple community partners offering their unique programming and organize wrap-around support for those accessing our services.
The CHHSA Shelter is fitted with 6 Supportive Housing units for those seeking longer-term, transitional solutions. Our facility also offers 10 additional beds for those in need of overnight shelter. According to the Government of Nova Scotia, the opening of CHHSA has brought the total number of shelter beds in Nova Scotia to 558 and the number of supportive housing units to 685.
Our shelter greatly appreciates donations to support our mission, whether it's contributing towards meal provisions or aiding with administrative duties. Whether you're able to donate regularly or sporadically, your support is invaluable to us. Donating is a meaningful way to contribute to your community and positively impact the lives of those we serve.
CHHSA was formed in 2018. The organization was incorporated in the same year and governed by an executive committee and a broader board of directors. We received our charitable status in November 2020. In late 2022, the Town of Amherst granted us the funding to hire our first Executive Director, Ashley Legere, who was officially appointed in late February of 2023.
At CHHSA, we are dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for residents of Cumberland County experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity by providing transitionary housing, emergency beds, and support services.
To see a day that as a basic Human Right, every resident of Cumberland County has access to suitable, sustainable, and affordable housing. We believe everyone deserves a place to call home, and we work tirelessly to make that a reality.
Ashley Legere, CHHSA Executive Director
